DIY Humminbird Nectar

It's that time of year again. The Hummingbirds should be soon arriving in your neck of the woods if they haven't already. For some of us in the midwest, we have had a few sightings in our area already. I wanted to make sure my feeder was out and ready to go as the season approaches. I am using the same feeder as last year, so I cleaned it up and made sure it was in working order. For the recipe below I made 1 cup of nectar using 1/4 of sugar.  I will make bigger batches as I start getting birds eating my nectar.

Check out the video here to see me make the nectar!

Instructions:

  • Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water (use filtered or bottled water) and bring to a boil (this to kill any bacteria or mold present)
  • Let the water cool and fill the feeder.
  • Extra sugar water can be stored in a refrigerator for later use (make sure to label so your family doesn't drink it)
  • The red dye should not be added. (this is very harmful to the birds and can make them sick)
Sit back and enjoy watching the birds drink off your feeder.

Tip: Make sure you change out the water every couple of days, and the feeder is clean and free of ants or debris. A clean feeder and fresh nectar will keep your hummers happy!

If you don't have time to make your own food and want something more convenient you can purchase from the store. Make sure to get the nectar that is clear and free of red dye.

*Facts about hummingbirds*

The ruby-throated hummingbird flies 500 miles nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico during both its spring and fall migrations

But in some locations--especially if there is artificial lighting such as porch light--hummingbirds may actually feed well into the night, usually during warmer weather.Hummingbirds do also fly at night, but this almost always happens during migration

Hummingbirds can extend their long, skinny tongues twice as far as the bill, which helps them reach nectar deep inside flowers.

Hummingbirds live 3-5 years.

They can fly up to 49mph! Wow, that's fast!

The love the color red. Add some red flowers to attract them to the yard!
